11.20.3 Course Synopses
VPT 801: Correlative Veterinary Pathology (3 Credit Units)
An independent necropsy, histo-pathological case analysis and presentation in the form of seminars and/or discussions. A strong emphasis is placed on necropsy of animals and diagnosis of lesions in biopsy specimens, classification of neoplasms and review of selected cases from the departmental archive.
VPT 802: Advanced General Pathology (3 Credit Units)
The mechanism of disease including the degenerative, inflammatory and neoplastic responses of cells and tissues to injury. The biology of the neoplastic cell and theories of oncogenesis. Emphasis would be placed on basic pathology in animals and introduction to systemic approach in disease diagnosis.
VPT 803: Advanced Veterinary Systemic Veterinary Pathology I. (3 Credit Units)
Basic reactions of the respiratory, cardiovascular, haemopoietic and integumentary systems in disease, and on the pathology and pathogenesis of their diseases particularly those that are of importance in the tropics. Emphasis would be placed on the respiratory, cardiovascular, haemopoietic and integumentary systems in disease and on the pathogenesis and anatomic pathology correlated with interpretative clinical pathology where appropriate.
VPT 804: Advanced Systemic Veterinary Pathology II (3 Credit Units)
The basic reactions of the digestive, musculo-skeletal, and nervous systems in disease and on the pathogenesis and anatomic pathology correlated with the interpretative clinical pathology where appropriate.
VPT 805: Advanced Systemic Veterinary Pathology III (3 Credit Units)
The basic reactions of the reproductive, urinary, and endocrine systems as well as special senses in disease, and on the pathogenesis and anatomic pathology correlated with the interpretative clinical pathology where appropriate.
VPT 806: Advanced Veterinary Clinical Pathology I (3 Credit Units)
An in-depth course dealing with the bone marrow function and evaluation; erythrocyte, leucocyte and platelet structure. Function and pathology; anaemia, pigment and iron metabolism, normal and defective blood coagulation.
VPT 807: Advanced Veterinary Clinical Pathology II (3 Credit Units)
Concepts of normality, electrolyte acid-base balance, carbohydrates, lipid, protein and mineral metabolism in health and disease; evaluation of liver, pancreatic, gastrointestinal and endocrine functions.
VPT 808: Advanced Veterinary Exfoliative Cytology (2 Credit Units)
Advanced study of exfoliates in organ and tissue biopsies and their interpretation in diagnostic and clinical pathology. Emphasis would be placed on microscopic evaluation and screening of smears from organs, effusions and tissue biopsies.
VPT 809: Veterinary Immuno-pathology (2 Credit Units)
Structure and function of the immune system; the immune response: cytokines: major histocompatibility complex (MHC); mechanisms of immunological injury: autoimmune and other immuno – mediated diseases: immunodeficiency states: immunodiagnostic procedures.
VPT 810: Comparative Pathology (2 Credit Units)
Pathology of laboratory animals, primates, fishes, marine animals and wildlife
VPT 811: Nutritional Pathology (2 Credit Units)
Macroscopic and microscopic studies of metabolic diseases of bone, protein, mineral and vitamin deficiencies; disease processes induced by faulty nutrition.
VPT 812: Veterinary Toxicologic Pathology (2 Credit Units)
A study of the aetiology, pathogenesis and pathology of toxicoses and xenobiotics in domestic animals. Cellular and molecular mechanisms of injury. Cellular response to injury, inflammation and carcinogenesis will be considered.
VPT 813: Ultrastructural Pathology (2 Credit Units)
Current theories encompassing electron optics and their applications in general staining and cytochemistry, immunocytochemistry, autoradiography, negative staining and X-ray micro-analysis, image digitalization, processing and presentation as well as photomicrography in veterinary pathology.
VPT 814: Research Methods in Veterinary Pathology (2 Credit Units)
Types, areas and objectives of pathology research; research tools; experimental designs; qualitative methods; including steriology; statistical methods and scientific writing.
VPT 897: Thesis Seminar II (Post-data) (1 Credit Unit)
This is a follow-up seminar/post-data or bench work findings. It should cover detailed analysis and interpretation of research results, discussion of findings in view of previous reports and new ideas emanating from the study, conclusion and recommendations for future work.
VPT 898: Thesis Seminar I (Pre-data) (1 Credit Unit)
This is essentially a pre-data seminar on the research focus of the student’s project covering the title, objectives and scope of the work, review of relevant literature, experimental design and methodology.
VPT 899: Research Project (6 Credit Units)
An approved research project.
