11.17.3 Course Synopses
VCS 801: Advanced Orthopaedic Surgery (2 Credit Units)
Biology and surgery of bone fracture, pathology, diagnosis and principles of treatment; anaesthetic considerations and antibiotic selection, orthopaedic nursing; management of specific fractures in dogs and cats; metabolic and neoplastic bone disease, contractures and joint diseases. Arthrodesis and amputations shall be discussed. Practical sessions on instrumentation; implants and casts, emergency fracture management, internal fixation, bone grafting and radiographic diagnosis of orthopaedic diseases.
VCS 802: Advanced Surgical Techniques (2 Credit Units)
New concepts in sterilization of instruments, equipment and personnel. Advances in suture materials and patterns; management of various paresis; laparascopic/endoscopic procedures; tissue grafts as well as selected cosmetic procedures; advances in wound management and use of lasers in surgery shall be discussed.
VCS 803: Advanced Soft Tissue Surgery (3 Credit Units)
Designed to perfect the techniques of basic soft tissue surgeries as well as acquaint postgraduate students with the conduct of clinical and research soft tissue surgical techniques with emphasis on the abdominal and thoracic surgeries. Review of basic surgical procedures, surgical emergencies and resuscitation, wound management, parotid duct transposition, unilateral lobectomy, esophagostomy, tracheostomy, diaphragmatic herniorrhaphy, carpal pad transposition and pyloroplasty. Practical sessions on instrumentation; pre and post operative patient management as well as selected soft tissue procedures shall be performed.
VCS 804: Food Animal Surgery: (3 Credit Units)
Diagnosis and management of common surgical conditions in ruminants and pigs, with emphasis on the head and neck, abdomen, gastrointestinal, urogenital and locomotion systems. Various laparotomy approaches and management of impaction, rumen foreign body, traumatic reticulo-peritonitis and other traumatic conditions, abomasal displacement; management of genito-urinary system. Laboratory sessions would include the performance of selected operative procedures such as neutering, horn, eye and related surgeries. The use of ophthalmoscope, auroscope and otoscope for examination.
VCS 805: Diagnostic Imaging Principles and Techniques: (3 Credit Units)
Introduction to radio-physics including production of x-ray, x-ray beam restrictors, grid, intensifying and fluoroscopic screens, filters, contrast and sharpness, photographic characteristics of x-ray film, radiation hazards and protection, x-ray film, the cassettes and screens, darkroom developer and fixer, film processing, radiographic faults and their remedy. Positioning of different animals for the various examinations. Lectures and practical sessions on instrumentation, contrast studies and artifacts associated with other imaging techniques including, ultrasonography and C.T. Scan.
VCS 806: Wound Management (2 Credit Units)
Basic processes of wound healing. Various approaches to wound closure, dressing and topical medications. Principles of reconstructive surgery. Types of wound, management of wounds of the head, truck and limbs of companion animals.
VCS 807: Diagnostic Radiology (3 Credit Units)
A review of normal radiographic anatomy of various parts of the body. Theory of practical and practical on interpretation of radiological diseases of animals.
VCS 808: Large Animal Intensive Care (3 Credit Units)
Lectures and practical on principles of intensive care for large animals suffering from severe trauma and advanced disease before, during and after surgery, assessment and treatment of body fluid disorders, blood transfusion, maintenance of circulatory, pulmonary, hepatic and renal homeostasis in surgical cases.
VCS 809: Anaesthetic Techniques (3 Credit Units)
Lecture and practical sessions in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biophysics and biochemistry related to anaesthesia. Lectures and practical instructions on anaesthetic apparatus and basic monitoring equipment, pre-anaesthetic assessment and preparation, analgesia, sedation, intravenous anaesthesia, inhalation anaesthesia, patient monitoring muscle relaxation and artificial ventilation, local anaesthesia, anaesthetic emergencies, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
VCS 810: Small Animal Intensive Care (2 Credit Units)
Lectures and practical on principles of intensive care for small animals suffering from severe trauma and advanced disease before, during and after surgery, assessment and treatment of body fluid disorders, blood transfusion; maintenance of circulatory, pulmonary hepatic and renal homeostasis in surgical cases.
VCS 811 Equine Surgery (2 Credit Units)
Laparotomy incisions, management of colic, management of cryptochidism, parturient injuries, upward patellar fixation as well as surgeries of the eye, ear and other specialized organs. Pre-operative and post-operative complications in horses, trauma management,
VCS 812: Advanced Diagnostic Imaging (3 Credit Units)
Theory and practical sessions on Interpretation of ultrasonography and CT scans of various diseases especially of the abdomen and neuro-muscular tissues. Principles and application of Ultrasonography, Computerized Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging would also be discussed.
VCS 814: Clinical Anaesthesia (3 Credit Units)
Lecture and clinical practice on selection and application of anaesthetics in both small and large animals. Anaesthetic management of predictable problems relating to species, breeds, ages, diseases and operative procedures.
VCS 816: Reviews in Veterinary Surgery (1 Credit Unit)
This is a tutorial session geared towards the analysis and critique of selected surgical publications in journals or scientific proceedings. Each student is to select a predetermined number of publications which he/she would extensively review and proffer suggestions on improvement.
VCS 823: Advanced Clinical Oncology (3 Credit Units)
General principles and advances in clinical oncology. Tumor biology, tumor immunology, clinical evaluation, clinical diagnosis and management of selected neoplastic conditions e.g. leukemia, transmissible venereal tumor, mammary tumors, osteosarcomas and mast cell tumors.
VCS 824: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2 Credit Units)
A motivative application of developments in surgical techniques including organ transplantation, neuro-surgery and ophthalmic surgery. Management and reconstruction of various traumatic defects as well as flapping and grafting techniques are to be discussed.
VCS 825: Cardiovascular Surgery (2 Credit Units)
Standard and modern techniques such as laser techniques in vascular and cardiac surgery. The use of various prosthesis in cardiovascular surgeries.
VCS 826: Ophthalmic and aural Surgeries (2 Credit Units)
In depth discussion on the diagnosis, surgery, pathology and treatment of ocular and aural disorders of animals. Instrumentation as well as techniques in the management of glaucoma, cataract; intraocular prosthesis, aural hematomas, lateral ear resection and exposures of the middle ear. Laboratory sessions would include selective surgical procedures of the eye and ear.
VCS 827: Problems in Surgery (1 Credit Unit)
A student takes on a particular surgical topic (review or minor project) and writes it to a standard adjudged adequate for publication.
VCS 897: Thesis Seminar I (Pre-data seminar) (1 Credit Unit)
This is a follow-up seminar/post-data or bench work findings. It should cover detailed analysis and interpretation of research results, discussion of findings in view of previous reports and new ideas emanating from the study, conclusion and recommendations for future work.
VCS 898: Thesis Seminar II (Post-data seminar) (1 Credit Unit)
This is essentially a pre-data seminar on the research focus of the student’s project covering the title, objectives and scope of the work, review of relevant literature, experimental design and methodology.
VCS 899: Research Project (6 Credit Units)
An approved research project.
