VCH 802 Veterinary Environmental Health (2 Credit Units)
Definition of terminologies; practices of Veterinary Medicine and its impact on human and the environment; industrial, farm and abattoir wastes and their roles in the maintenance of animal disease cycles and zoonoses; air-borne infections including Q fever; control of air and water borne infections; environmental sanitation and disinfection; vector control.
VCH 803 Biostatistics in Veterinary Science (2 Credit Units)
Development of sampling protocols in veterinary research; sample survey methods, sampling frames, sample design, sampling methods and sampling size determination. Development of data management protocol; data collection instruments, data organization, analysis and achieving. Health demographic surveys.
VCH 804 Advances in Vaccine Production and Vaccination (2 Credit Units)
History of vaccination, history of animal vaccines and vaccination; development and uses of animal vaccines in Nigeria; concepts of antigenicity and immunogenicity as related to groups and types of animal vaccines; multi-potent vaccines and vaccination procedures, advantages, disadvantages and precautions; planning a vaccination campaign, the cold chain and related problems; determination of vaccine efficacy and breakdown; JP 28, PARC and PACE programmes, vaccination in the face of current outbreaks.

VCH 806 Technical Report Writing (2 Credit Units)
Introduction to types and classes of Veterinary technical reporting systems and scientific documents in research and professional practices; Research design, recording and reporting biological, biomedical and livestock agricultural contents; Determination of audience and systems; Writing drafts before during and after data collection. Data gathering presentation and illustration; Appropriate language format, style, syntax, themes; Uses and presentation of numerical and non-numerical information; Information systems for livestock production and public health; Manual and computerized systems, bibliographies, summaries and abstract, final drafts and personal appraisal; preparation and presentation of research proposals, project reports and seminars.
VCH 807 Milk Hygiene (2 Credit Units)
Basic requirements for producing quality milk, interaction of milking equipment with udder health, milk collection, transportation, handling and processing, inspection of milk and milk products, milk preservation, storage and quality control, milk tests including somatic cell counts and standard plate counts for evaluation of milk quality.
VCH 808 Veterinary Preventive Medicine (2 Credit Units)
Basic concepts of control, prevention and eradication of diseases; disease surveillance and reporting; historical perspective on the control of animal diseases; regional, national, international and global dimensions of disease control; strategies for control, prevention and eradication of diseases; planning and administrative organization for disease control; channels of action in disease control programme: diagnostic tactics, mass treatment, quarantine, restriction of animal movement, slaughter of diseased or exposed animals, disposal and indemnity, environmental hygiene, mass immunization, ring vaccination, breeding for resistance, improving management for disease control; new international and WTO sanitary requirements, impinging on international trade of livestock and livestock products.
VCH 810 Advanced Readings in Veterinary Public Health (1 Credit Unit)
Review and critique of the papers published in recent journals, proceedings and periodicals. The student will select relevant paper from a recent journal and present the detail of techniques used, results obtained and his own critique on the validity and use of the results and conclusions with his own recommendations
VCH 812 Control of Major and Emerging Zoonotic Diseases (2 Credit Units)
Basic concepts of zoonoses, A review of zoonotic diseases and their classification, prevalence, detection, prevention and control of selected bacterial, viral, chlamydial and parasitic zoonoses Factors influencing the occurrence of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases, the control of emerging zoonotic diseases such as Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, Avian Influenza and Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
VCH 813 Advances in Veterinary Public Health (3 Credit Units)
Veterinary Medicine’s margins and interface; components of Veterinary Medicine and their relation to human health, the role of Veterinarians in public health implementation and relationship in combating human hunger, malnutrition and environmental pollution; role of Veterinarians in producing safe foods (food handling, sorting, packaging, distribution and retailing), detection and prevention of drugs and pesticide residues in foods of animal origin; avoidance of occupational diseases; food safety for Veterinarians- perspectives, practice and policy; comprehensive approach to food borne hazards, testing and sampling; prevention and control strategies throughout the food chain including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points. Considerations of the organization and delivery of Veterinary services at the local, state and national levels.
VCH 814 Epizootiological Approaches to Disease Investigation and Control (3 Credit Units)
General epizootiological concepts; sampling methods in epizootiological studies; evaluation of diagnostic test; measurement of disease frequency and production in population; descriptive epizootiology, disease causation, surveys and analytic observational studies; Field investigations of epizootic, enzootic, pandemic and sporadic diseases prevention and eradication; levels of disease prevention, strategies for disease control and eradication in a population; important factors in designing disease control and eradication programmes; OIE pathways for declaration of freedom from different diseases, risk identification, assessment, management and communication.
VCH 816 Abattoir Management and By-product Utilization (2 Credit Units)
Basic factors in abattoir design; abattoir descriptions, drawings, specifications and equipment requirements; cold room designs; Municipal abattoirs and slaughter slabs; management of municipal and export abattoirs, incinerator and compost sheds for condemned meats and manure sludge tanks; an account of animal by-products (such as hides and skins, blood hooves etc.) and their uses in both non-food and food preparations
VCH 818 Veterinary Jurisprudence (2 Credit units)
A review of Acts, Regulations; Rule and Orders relating to animal movements, importation and trade cattle routes; Animal disease control Acts, Veterinary Public Health Acts and laws, importation and exportation of animals and animal-bye products, Pharmacy Acts, legislations regulating the importation; marketing and uses of Veterinary drugs and biologicals; importation of vaccines and professional responsibilities for the use of Veterinary drugs and vaccines; Rabies control Acts and control of pets and companion animals; Food and Drug Administration in Nigeria, the adequacy or otherwise of existing channels of statuary control; International aspects and responsibilities in Veterinary jurisprudence, Veterinary legislations in other countries of the world.
VCH 820 Veterinary Business and Management (2 Credit Units)
A review of demand and supply of Veterinary services in Nigeria; types and description of Veterinary business and ventures till date; opportunities in a variety of food animal practices/businesses in the food chain; companion, sports and security animal practice/business; practice management techniques; capital equipment and staff requirements; financial management in Veterinary business; keys to efficiency and job satisfaction
VCH 897: Thesis Seminar I (Pre-data) (1 Credit Unit)
This is a follow-up seminar/post-data or bench work findings. It should cover detailed analysis and interpretation of research results, discussion of findings in view of previous reports and new ideas emanating from the study, conclusion and recommendations for future work.
VCH 898: Thesis Seminar II (Post-data) (1 Credit Unit)
This is essentially a pre-data seminar on the research focus of the student’s project covering the title, objectives and scope of the work, review of relevant literature, experimental design and methodology.

VCT 801: Clinical Procedures in Theriogenology (3 Credit units)
Clinical procedures for the diagnosis and management of reproductive disorders in male and female animals: examination of the environment and subject; instrumentation; examination for breeding soundness.
VCT 802: Laboratory Procedures in Theriogenology (3 Credit units)
Laboratory methods employed in the diagnosis and management of theriogenology cases: stains and staining procedures; basic tissue processing; histometric determinations; rapid tests for reproductive diseases; assay of reproductive hormones. Preparation and preservation of museum specimens.
VCT 803: Artificial Insemination and Reproductive Biotechnology (3 Credit units)
Semen: collection, composition and methods of preservation. Semen expanders: characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Evaluation of fresh and preserved semen for insemination. Oestrus cycle. Oestrus methods of detection, induction and synchronization. Artificial insemination: basic equipment; techniques. Super ovulation, in vitro fertilization; embryo transfer, cloning and associated challenges.
VCT 804: Veterinary Obstetrics (3 Credit units)
The reproductive process and associated problems. Methods of pregnancy diagnosis. Obstetrical problems: diagnosis and management. Neonatal diseases: prevention, diagnosis and management.
VCT 805: Infertility (3 Credit units)
Causes of reproductive disorders and failure in male and female animals. Reproductive diseases due to infectious and non-infectious causes. Genetic and congenital causes of infertility and sterility. Cytogenetics of reproduction. Investigation and management of infertility.
VCT 806: Udder Health and Mastitis (2 Credit units)
Anatomy and Physiology of the mammary glands. Endocrine regulation of mammary secretions. Infectious and non-infectious diseases of mammary glands and their management. Maintenance of udder health.
VCT 807: Theriogenology Case Study and Presentation (3Credit unit)
Students registered for the MVSc. degree programme will be required to follow-up Theriogenology cases, document the same and present at seminars.
VCT 808: Theriogenology Case Reviews (1 Credit Unit)
Students registered for the MVSc. degree will be required to review/critique recent Theriogenology research publications at seminars.
VCT 809: Comparative Mammalian Reproduction (3 Credit Units)
Pre- and postnatal development of genitalia, comparative spermatogenesis and onset of puberty and reproductive patterns of the female domestic animals and oestrous cycle; ovulation, conception and gestation; spermatogenesis, copulation, capacitation; and reproductive behaviour of mammals.
VCT 814: Reproductive Herd Health Management (3 Credit Units)
Principles and application of herd health management in feedlot and dairy cattle, sheep, goats and horses, monitoring reproductive performance and health problems in food animals.
VCT 897: Thesis Seminar I (Pre-data) (1 Credit Unit)
